North Woods Village at Edison Lakes to Hold Dementia Caregiver Seminar on Effective Communication Techniques

Free Program by New Memory Care Assisted Living Community to Address Ways Caregivers Can Maintain Communications with a Loved One with Dementia

(Mishawaka, IN) January 15, 2014 – North Woods Village at Edison Lakes, the area’s first assisted living community dedicated to caring for those with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other memory impairment, announced today that it will host a free community seminar for caregivers, titled, “Effective Communication Techniques.” The seminar, presented by Shellie Kermin, Community Relations Director, will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. at North Woods Village at Edison Lakes located at 1409 E. Day Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Light refreshments will be served. Loved ones are welcome, but a reservation in advance is respectfully requested.

Says, Ms. Kermin, “Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can take a lot from a family, but memory loss does not have to remove the joy of communication with your loved one. Memory loss can impede your loved one’s ability to talk, which can greatly affect communication between the two of you and other family members. However, North Woods Village at Edison Lakes can help you continue to connect with your loved one and create meaningful moments to treasure. If you are caring for a loved one with memory loss at home, we invite you to join us to learn useful tips and techniques for communicating at various levels of cognitive decline.”

Ms. Dale C. Carter, HFA, Executive Director of North Woods Village at Edison Lakes adds, “As memory care experts, we understand your challenges as a caregiver. Through “New Directions,SM our signature memory care program that features best-practice, person-centered care; nurses on site 24/7 and a favorable caregiver-to-resident ratio, we are committed to providing free educational programs, resources and support to caregivers in the community as part of our mission.

“By learning more about memory loss, you can do more for your loved one and feel more confident in your understanding of his/her problems and his/her needs. Increasing your understanding of dementia can enable you to enhance the quality of care you provide to him/her in the home.”

Please RSVP if you would like to bring your loved one with you to the program.
